Walhalla

Founded as a gold-mining town in 1862 and once one of Australia’s richest towns, home to over 4000 gold-seekers, Walhalla is now a historic location frozen in time and home to 20 residents. Two and a half hours drive east of Melbourne, this sleepy mountainside town is full of lovingly restored heritage buildings including churches, shops, schools, and hotels, and a rich gold mining history. Nestled at the southern edge of the Victorian Alps in a steep-sided valley and surrounded by lush forest and fern gullies, Walhalla is a picturesque location and is notably spectacular in autumn. The town centre hosts a pub, several cafes, a gift store, a museum, and a corner store. For a taste of gold mining fever, try your hand at panning for gold down at Stringers Creek or experience a tour of the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, a three-kilometre vein of gold that runs through the town. Walhalla is also popular as a base for camping, fishing, four-wheel driving, and bushwalking.
