Situated on the traditional lands of the Yawuru people, Broome's story began in the 1880s as a pearling boomtown, attracting people from Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Japan and Europe. Today, this unique blend of Aboriginal traditions, Asian influences and European charm is evident everywhere you go. Explore Chinatown's bustling streets, delve into Broome's fascinating pearl lugger history, or take a camel ride along Cable Beach as the sun dips below the horizon. Learn about the fascinating pearl industry on a guided tour of a working pearl farm, where you'll witness the entire process from hatchery to showroom. Travel back in time by marveling at perfectly preserved dinosaur footprints fossilised in rock for over 120 million years. Spot rare snubfin dolphins in their natural habitat on a morning or sunset cruise. Lake Argyle

Lake Argyle is one of the largest man-made lakes in the southern hemisphere and home to more than 70 islands. Created by the Ord River Dam, it's classified as an inland sea and at its peak in the green season Lake Argyle holds a staggering 10.7 billion cubic metres of water at full supply level. It is located approximately 75km by road from Kununurra, via the Victoria Highway.

The Kimberley Discovery - Day 12
Lake Argyle to Katherine

Start your journey from Lake Argyle with a scenic 40-minute drive back to Kununurra through the rugged Carr Boyd Ranges. This is a good opportunity to refuel and stock up on supplies before the long drive east. From Kununurra, the well-maintained National Highway guides you onward. You'll pass the striking red cliffs of Mirima National Park and the historic Golden Gate Checkpoint as you head towards the Northern Territory border. After crossing into the NT, you'll reach Timber Creek, a small town where you can have a break and even visit the police station museum. The drive from here is spectacular, with the highway winding past stunning escarpments and the mighty Victoria River. You can stop at various rest areas along the way for a break. Continue on until you arrive in Katherine, a hub for supplies and the gateway to the magnificent Nitmiluk Gorge.

Katherine, NT

It is the third largest town in the Northern Territory. Nature comes alive at Katherine Gorge as you cruise, canoe, or fly along the Gorge by helicopter. Take a more challenging route and hike the Jatbula Trail, or soak it up in luxury at Cicada Lodge. Travel like a local by going straight to the Territorians who have the best tips covering everything from road trips to epic swimming spots, foodie haunts, community art centres and Aboriginal cultural experiences.The Katherine region is most famous for Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park, a place of cultural significance for the Aboriginal Jawoyn people. The gorge is made up of 13 individual gorges, each separated by rapids and waterfalls, some you can swim or hike through. The famous Jatbula Trail bushwalk also starts here, stretching for 62 kilometres (36 miles) before its end at Edith Falls.

The Katherine region is filled with hidden gems including natural hot springs that are free to visit and explore!
On the edge of the Katherine Township, situated on the bank of the river are the Katherine Hot Springs. Framed by native vegetation the pools are surrounded by green forestry creating a picturesque backdrop as you relax and soak. With handmade steel rail and access ramp, the pools are for everyone to enjoy. With a grassed area shaded by trees and a playground, this is the perfect spot to stop and relax - there is also a pop-up cafe that operates in the dry season - if planning to visit in November - May, check ahead as they can close during the rainy season due to flooding.
The small town of Mataranka, roughly 1-hour's drive from Katherine, is a welcomed stop for tourists, with lots to explore from watching the fish be fed, browsing the local galleries, or visiting the sandy-bottom hot springs. SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - NitNit Dreaming Two Gorge Tour

The NitNit Dreaming cruise is one of the most popular tours in the region. A boat will take you to the end of the first gorge, where you will experience the beauty of the large boulders, rock pools and sands that make up the crossover to the second gorge. Along the way, cultural guides will share their knowledge about plants, animals, Dreamtime stories and culture. Surrounded by the limestone escarpment, the scenery is second to none. Immerse yourself in the cultural significance and geology of the park - discover historical facts, such as how the river has been named.

Nitmiluk to Jabiru, in Kakadu National Park

Departing the settlement of Nitmiluk, drive west back towards the town of Katherine. 1 hour north up the Stuart Highway, you will reach Pine Creek, once the gold mining capital of the Northern Territory. From here, turn onto the Kakadu Highway and travel through the beautiful surrounds of Kakadu National Park. There are several roadside stops along the way to take in the unique scenery, including Bukbukluk and Mirrai lookouts. As you enter the town of Jabiru, you will see the Bowali Visitor Centre, a great first stop to get familiarised with the area, grab a coffee, and check out the interpretive displays before getting settled into the village.

Jabiru

At the heart of Kakadu National Park, Jabiru offers sanctuary for those gearing up to explore the park. Located 253km from Darwin and at the tail end of the Arnhem Highway, Jabiru is serviced with a full sized supermarket, resorts and various restaurants around town. Walk around Jabiru Lake and enjoy a coffee while browsing the art at Marrawuddi Art Gallery before learning more about the traditional owners of the park at Bowali Visitor Centre. Arnhemlander Cultural & Heritage 4WD Day Tour with Kakadu Cultural Tours - Lunch Included

This journey into Arnhem Land takes you to some of the oldest rock art sites in the world and provides an opportunity to understand what life was like early settlement. Cross over the infamous Cahill's Crossing and spend the day exploring one of the most remote regions in Australia, Arnhem Land. Experience the excitement of Cahill's Crossing on a 4wd vehicle, getting up close to crocodiles as they stalk barramundi. Only accessible by permit, Arnhem Land has incredible sandstone escarpments, outcrops, rock art sites, forests, floodplains and billabongs with birdlife. Your experienced guide will explain the importance of this land for the Aboriginal traditional owners, the Bininj people and talk about life in Gunbalunya (Oenpelli). Jabiru to Darwin via Ubirr and Cahills Crossing

Just after turning onto the Arnhem Highway, if you haven't yet visited the rock art at Ubirr and Cahills Crossing but you have some spare time today, now is a great time to take a quick detour by turning onto Oenpelli Road. This 30 minute drive (one-way) will take you to a parking area right by Cahills Crossing over the East Alligator River. From the 3 viewing platforms you can sit and watch the saltwater crocodiles as they wait to catch mullet and barramundi swimming over the crossing in late dry season. A walk up to the Nadab lookout takes you past breathtaking rock art sites.
Once you are back on the road, head back towards Darwin, passing Mary River National Park. If you're feeling hungry after your morning's adventures, 15 minutes on from the Mary River Crossing you may wish to stop at the Corroboree Park Tavern, a popular outback roadhouse open until late for the weary traveller. From here it is only an hours further driving to arrive in the tropical, far north city of Darwin.

Darwin

Darwin is a beautiful tropical city situated on the edge of Darwin Harbour and bordering a number of national parks and reserves, creating a fascinating, diverse mix of culture, people and nature. It is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park, and the isolated Tiwi Islands. The city is also steeped in history with indigenous culture in the region dating back tens of thousands of years.
