Mataranka, NT

Located along the Stuart Highway 431 kilometres southeast of Darwin, and 115 kilometres southeast of Katherine in the Northern Territory lies the small township of Mataranka. The autobiographical novel We of the Never Never by Jeannie Gunn, first published in 1908, is an account of the enduring hardships of early Australian homestead living in Elsey Station in Mataranka, the novel is now regarded as an Australian classic. Today, Mataranka is a modern tourist town with many experiences and attractions to offer visitors. Swim, bushwalk, camp, boat, fish, or view historical sites in the 13,800-hectare Elsey National Park. For a unique experience, unwind in the Mataranka thermal pools, known for their warm, sandy-bottomed springs, surrounded by palms. The area around the thermal pool is a breeding ground for the Little Red Flying Fox; their chattering adds to the tropical charm of the pools.
