Hahndorf, SA

Established by Prussian settlers in 1839, Hahndorf is acknowledged as Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. The region’s original inhabitants were the Peramangk Aboriginal people, dating back 2400 years. Hahndorf is now a picturesque boutique village and a shopper’s delight, located just 25 minutes from Adelaide, it is a favourite day trip destination. Lining the main street are pubs, restaurants, bakeries, cafes, and an incredible range of small goods shops, most with a persistent German flavour and flair. There are many wineries and cellar doors to wander into, as well as several local breweries and a distillery. Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to pay a visit to Hahndorf, as the spectacular trees provide a sea of colourful foliage.
