Perth is the capital city of Western Australia developed on the Swan River, which is a sacred place for its traditional landowners, the Noongar people. The city has a rich history, from indigenous culture through to colonial architecture. The city is a hub for indigenous and modern art and award-winning restaurants, while a short drive will take you to some of the best beaches in Australia with white sand and crystal blue water. Just 19km off the mainland is Rottnest Island, also named Wadjemup by the Noongar people. The island is a protected nature reserve and one of the few homes to the native marsupial the Quokka, but also boasts a range of activities including skydiving, kayaking, snorkelling and historical points of interest.

Perth to Rottnest Island on the Rottnest Express

Departing from the Barrack Street Jetty in Perth, Rottnest Express provides the ferry service to Perth’s favourite island paradise, Rottnest Island. Disembark the ferry ready to explore and discover the island.

Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is situated 19 kilometers off the coast of Perth. Getting to the island is easy as ferries depart regularly from Perth’s Barrack Street Jetty, Fremantle, and Hillarys Boat Harbour - or you can get there by air with a seaplane, air taxi, or helicopter.
Rottnest Island offers visitors a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery, and a rich cultural heritage to discover, find out why the local Noongar people called the island Wadjemup which means ‘place across the water where the spirits are’. 
Cycling is the best way to get around the island or there’s a hop-on/hop-off bus service that regularly runs around the island, stopping at some of the more secluded beaches and surf breaks.
With 63 of the prettiest beaches you’re likely to see anywhere, 20 beautiful bays, and many coral reefs and wrecks, Rottnest Island is a marine paradise. You can spend your days exploring some of the most spectacular swimming spots, diving, and surfing breaks in the world, and a must-do is exploring the snorkel trails, with over 135 species of tropical fish and 25 species of coral to discover.
There’s plenty to experience out of the water too, from meeting the world-famous Quokka to exploring the excellent bike and walking trails that traverse the island. You can also discover the island’s military history, as you explore underground tunnels, the lighthouse, Oliver Hill, and Bickley Battery. You may like to start your day with a stroll through the city streets to take in the abundance of street art. Taking its place as Australia's second street art city, streets and laneways are decorated with funky murals and sculptures highlighting Perth in all its colour and diversity. Check out the city's street art map online to immerse yourself in the mesmerising art, stopping for coffee at any one of the trendy cafes and espresso bars scattered through the city.

Head to Kings Park (Kaarta Koomba) for an authentic experience of Indigenous culture. The base of Kings Park was an important ceremonial and dreaming area for Aboriginal males, while The Boodja Gnarning Walk takes you through a diverse range of flora which were used for survival by the Noongar people, and captures this knowledge through interpretive signage and artworks. Make your way to the lively Northbridge precinct to visit the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the WA Museum Boola Bardip, both offering rich cultural experiences.

From here, travel to the western most part of the Island, Flinders Chase National Park. As you travel through the park, keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies, reptiles, and koalas. Hobart to Triabunna

The drive from Hobart to Triabunna takes just over an hour, but it’s worth slowing down to enjoy the journey. Leaving the city, you’ll cross the Tasman Bridge before detouring through the Coal River Valley, a region of rolling vineyards, orchards, and farm gates. The historic village of Richmond is a highlight, home to Australia’s oldest stone bridge, Georgian-era buildings, galleries, and cosy cafes. Further along, Orford is a lovely seaside town with beaches and walking trails. Finally, in Triabunna, you’ll find a charming harbour village and the ferry departure point to Maria Island, known for its wildlife, walking trails, and convict history.

Triabunna

Protected deep in Spring Bay, Triabunna is more than just the gateway town to Maria Island. Surrounded by beautiful beaches, coastal reserves and eucalyptus forest, the town's relaxed pace of life is perfect for unwinding, and sitting on the dock of the bay as the gentle rhythm of island time passes by. The bay is perfect for fishing and sailing, and a big draw card is its abundance of readily available fresh seafood. Foodie lovers can tuck into a fresh catch just metres from the fishing boats that brought it in, while the adventurers will love exploring the surrounding natural wonders. There are several walks in the area, including the Pelican Walk through coastal reserves, or the Discovery Walk to see the town's preserved convict-era buildings.

The island offers excellent walking and cycling journeys. Short walks explore the buildings and ruins of Darlington, a ghost town with a convict and industrial past. The Reservoir Circuit is sheltered from the coastal winds and provides a glimpse of Maria Island's wildlife and history as you wander into a tall eucalypt forest.

The drive from Triabunna to Bicheno takes you along this beautiful stretch of Tasmania’s east coast. Heading north, the road hugs the coastline with glimpses of sparkling bays and rolling farmland. A short detour brings you to Spiky Bridge, an unusual convict-built structure with jagged stonework. Further along, Spiky Beach is a great spot for a quick walk and photo stop. As you approach Swansea, you’ll find stunning views over Great Oyster Bay to the pink granite peaks of Freycinet National Park. If time permits, take a detour into Freycinet National Park and enjoy some stunning short walks. From here, the drive to Bicheno takes you past vineyards, coastline, and beaches before arriving at this lively seaside town, known for its seafood, blowhole, penguin tours, and relaxed holiday vibe.
