Wild Kimberley in Luxury - Day 5
Katherine to Lake Argyle

Your captivating 515 km road trip from Katherine to Lake Argyle is a journey that transitions from the dry tropics of the Northern Territory to the rugged beauty of Western Australia. This adventure begins by heading west out of Katherine on the Victoria Highway (National Highway 1). This well-maintained road will be your companion for the majority of the drive, winding through vast pastoral lands and offering glimpses of the iconic boab trees that dot the landscape. Consider a break at Timber Creek, approximately two hours before the border. This small community provides an opportunity to refuel, grab a snack, and perhaps explore its historical sites. Further along, the Victoria River Roadhouse is another convenient stop for a stretch and refreshments.

The most critical part of your journey involves crossing the Northern Territory to Western Australian border, where strict quarantine regulations are enforced. A dedicated checkpoint on the Victoria Highway will require you to declare and dispose of specific items to protect WA's pristine environment and agriculture. Be prepared to surrender all fresh fruit, vegetables, and honey, as these are common carriers of pests and diseases.

After successfully navigating the border, continue on the Victoria Highway for about 7 km before taking the left turn onto Lake Argyle Road. You'll soon reach your destination of Lake Argyle where you can unwind amidst the stunning scenery of one of Australia's largest freshwater lakes.
