Bicheno
Bicheno is a beautiful small town on the east coast of Tasmania nestled between the spectacular Freycinet and Douglas-Apsley National Parks. It is the perfect spot to base yourself when exploring the spectacular east coast with its crystal blue waters, white sand beaches and breathtaking formations of the Granite Belt. Just offshore from the town, you will find Governor Island Marine Reserve which hosts amazing reefs that can be explored by either diving or jumping on a glass-bottomed boat tour. As the only penguin tour that operates on the East Coast of Tasmania, Bicheno Penguin Tours has been working hard to establish the Bicheno Little Blue Penguin colony back to its former glory through habitat rehabilitation. After you check in for your tour, a bus will take you out to the private penguin rookery (breeding area), which has been established over 30 years through restoring farmland back to viable penguin habitat. From here, your guide will explore the penguin rookery with you whilst teaching you interesting facts about the Little Blue Penguin and steps that everyone can take to improve the outlook for these unique birds. The tour provides a rare opportunity for you to be a part of their journey home, from emerging from the ocean to entering the burrow.
